Hat Care Guide
Hat Care Guide — How to Clean & Maintain Your Hats
A well-cared-for hat can last a lifetime. Here's our complete guide to keeping your headwear looking its best — organised by hat type.
Wool Felt & Fedora Hats
- Use a soft-bristle hat brush to remove dust and lint after each wear
- Brush in a counter-clockwise direction to maintain the nap of the felt
- For light stains, use a damp cloth and gentle dabbing — never rub
- Air dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight
- Store on a hat stand or in a hat box to maintain shape
- Do not machine wash wool or felt hats
Flat Caps & Newsboy Caps (Wool/Tweed)
- Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap
- Use a lint roller or soft brush between wears
- Dry flat away from heat
- Steam gently to reshape if the peak loses its curve
Straw Hats & Panama Hats
- Wipe with a slightly damp cloth — never submerge in water
- Air dry in a cool, shaded area (direct sunlight can cause cracking)
- Store upside-down to preserve the brim shape
- Use a hat stretcher if slightly misshapen after travel
Baseball Caps & Canvas Hats
- Spot clean with mild soap and a soft brush for small stains
- Machine wash on a gentle cycle in a laundry bag (cold water only)
- Never tumble dry — reshape while damp and air dry on a rounded surface
Beanies & Knit Hats
- Hand wash in cool water with a gentle wool detergent
- Press gently to remove water — never wring or twist
- Lay flat to dry on a clean towel
- Store folded flat to maintain elasticity
General Hat Care Tips
- Always handle hats by the brim, not the crown
- Rotate your hats to allow them to rest between wears
- Keep hats away from moisture and extreme heat
- Use a cedar block in your hat box to prevent moths and odours
