The hat reached Europe via Panama in the 19th century, when traders and canal workers brought it north, and the misnomer stuck. Ecuador's toquilla straw weaving tradition was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012.

The finest panama hats are woven in Montecristi — a small town on the Ecuadorian coast that produces the highest-grade toquilla work in the world. A superfino Montecristi panama, with a weave count of over 2,000 fibres per square inch, can take a single artisan four to six months to complete. The coarsest grades take a few days. The weave density determines not just quality but also flexibility: the finest panamas can be rolled into a tube without creasing and return to perfect shape — hence the phrase 'roll a panama'.

If the hat loses its shape, lightly mist with water and reshape by hand, then allow to dry on a hat stand.

Can you roll a panama hat?

Only the finest-grade panama hats — extrafino and superfino Montecristi weaves — can be safely rolled without damage. To roll, place the hat upside down, fold one side of the brim toward the crown, then roll from the brim end. Insert into a tube or hat travel case. Coarser grades (fino) will crease and crack if rolled. If you need a rollable travel hat, ensure the weave grade is explicitly described as superfino or rollable before attempting it.
